Finally Spring (I think)

Hey! Today the sun is shining and I’m so ready for spring. I’m so over winter. I’m sure everyone is with me. I’m ready to throw open the curtains, pop all the windows up, let the fresh smelling air fill my house. I’m ready to put away all the snow gear, put all the snow boots away and line up the rain boots in my mud room. I’m ready to cook with lighter ingredients, wear lighter clothing and re-decorating. Yes, re-decorating. I don’t mean decorating for the up coming holidays, but I mean out with the old and in with the new. I’m ready to start changing out and changing in. Who else is with me. So we maybe ready to change and update. Swap and add new. But sometimes we don’t know where to start. Sometimes it’s so overwhelming that there maybe a moment in this change that you would rather duck your head back under the blanket and wish ( just for that brief moment) that winter was still here. I’m here to help. We are going to walk through a couple of trends that are popping up this spring. And hopefully it will help ease the panic that is now starting to play in your head. Plants This is not new to anyone. And I’m sure it won’t come a shock to you. One of the design trends for spring is plants. Having the inside start to mimic what is going on outside. This is to get you ready to spend the long days of summer outside doing that which you love. So think green, flowers, minimal pots, height and texture. Natural wood Yup the outside again is coming in. There is something about surrounding yourself with nature that soothes the soul. So think natural wood frames for pictures. Natural wood trim, or butcher block counters, hood fans that are natural ( if you are building a house). If you are updating your house, try wood stools, coffee tables, end tables. If you want to change out a light think maybe a wooden drum light. Add wooden tools (cutting boards, bowls, spoons) in your kitchen. So many ways to bring wood into the home. 80’s Don’t get scared, it’s not the full on 80’s that some of us grew up with. We are not bringing back the big bangs, hammer acid wash pants, and really frizzy side ponytails. We are bringing back the curved edges of furniture that the 80’s brought in. It’s kind of like a new awakening of the 80’s mixed with the minimal style that we have now. So lower curved furniture ( chairs, couches) throw in an abstract coffee table. In building it would be really cool, geometric tile. Wallpaper Yup wallpaper is still a hot trend. But it looks like the wallpaper is being subdued a little bit so that the furniture, which is starting to amp up in color can really shine. Wallpaper that is more muted and kind of like … Read more

“Hygge” for Spring

Hey! With all this snow and cold that we in the Midwest have been dealing with. I’m ready for spring. Who else is with me? I can’t wait for the grass to start turning green, the trees to start getting that green tinged of new leaves. Birds returning to nest, baby animals. You know all the wonderful signs that the earth is waking up from a long winter sleep. So with (hopefully) spring around the corner. I have put together some spring edits for your home to help with the ushering in of Spring. We are going to talk about the strange word you may have been hearing and seeing all over pintrest etc. “Hygge” (hoo-ga), it’s a Danish word and concept for making your home, life and lifestyle inviting, comfortable, homey, warm, etc. It’s the process of making where and how you live simple yet filled with things that make you happy and bring joy. This is why the Danes are considered one of the most happiest people on earth. They understand this practice and stick to it. For experiment sake I’m going to use this trend in my home this month and see how this helps with the mood in my house. So there are 10 points to Hygge, I’m going to focus on 4 of them here. Atmosphere Presence Pleasure Comfort Atmosphere Candles, candles and more candles. Yes a huge fire hazard for anyone with kids, animals or are just plain clumsy and forgetful. But there is something that candlelight seems to evoke. I don’t know if it is a sense of calm, peace and safety or the warm orange light that it gives off. Candles will change the mood in any room. So this week I’m going to be lighting more candles and enjoying the flicker and movement of the flame. . Presence We have all heard this before, that we as a society need to be more present. We need to put down our devises and be more in the here and now. Be available that if the time arises conversations can be started, laughter can fill the home and more time can be spent with those that you love instead of those you have no idea who they are. So I’m setting a limit of screen time for me and my family. Phones will go away at a certain time and games will come out. Pleasure For me this means good food! Who does not like to gather round a table with friends and family and eat amazing food. Food that brings you back to those memories that you love and cherish. Or maybe there is something that you are dying to make but just don’t know when the right time is. Well in Denmark the right time is now. Great dishes for spring to try would be a strawberry shortcake, that new macaron recipe you want to make. Make it light and wonderful! I love this site. All her food looks so beautiful … Read more

in living color

Hey! Do you remember meeting a new friend and a question that they would alwasy ask “ What is your favorite colour?” Why do we always ask that question? Even to this day, we still ask about ones favorite colour. I wonder why? Is it because colour plays such a huge part in our lives? Is it because you can learn a lot about a person on what colour they choose? I don’t know the answer but that question is one of the toughest questions to answer. What is your favorite colour? For me, I really don’t know. I love all colours. I love the way that they play with each other. I love the emotions they evoke. I love the boldness or the subtlety that colour can bring. I love colour! We are surrounded by it, engulfed in it. It is one of the first elementary things that we distinguish. We learn our colours, red, yellow, blue. And once we learn these 3 basic primary colours the world opens up and the possibilities are endless. Every year, paint companies like Sherwin Williams and  Benjamin Moore come out with colour forecast, what will be trending and of course the ‘Colour of the Year’. This is a great jumping off point if you are trying to figure out what colours to use this year in building a home, renovating or just sprucing things up. Sherwin Williams.- This color took me by surprise, but man did it make me happy. For the past couple of years in the design world we have been painting in grays, whites, blacks and starting to add some deep greens. Well SW ( Sherwin Williams) came out with a color that is not even close to any of those for 2019. Hello beautiful Cavern Clay SW 7701. Yes it is not the color that we are used to seeing. This color has depth, has an earthy feel, has the ability to play well with so many different ideas. Think leather, wood, jute, natural fabrics and colors, and also the punch of bright tiles, carpets, blues, greens and whites. This color has the ability to go super sophisticated to beautifully carefree and cozy Benjamin Moore- they never disappoint when BM comes out with their color. I love what the color director said about this color.. That this color gives us a moment of pause in our crazy hectic lives. and this is just what this color delivers. This beautiful colour is timeless, calming, edgy, and cosmopolitan. Metropolitan AF-690 is the perfect warm, cozy yet airy grey. Anything you could dream of can go perfectly with this colour. It’s undertones meld perfectly with cooler colours or warmer colours. It’s is a truly beautiful grey. And grey is hard to make perfect. It’s one of those silent colours that lets you take a quiet breathe  from the mayhem and business of life. Again the question “ What is your favorite colour?” It’s whatever colour brings you joy. Whatever colour gets … Read more
